Mar. 2007 Delegate’s Report

Parent Clubs

  1. Parent Club Conference will be July 20-22 near Atlanta.
  2. Membership decline concerns many clubs. Awards publication sent to 153 clubs to identify potential members showing our breed. All breed club members encouraged to promote Parent Club memberships to their members.
  3. Letter received requesting committee involvement in education of Terrier temperament to judge Terriers. Committee concluded education falls under the responsibility of individual parent clubs.
  4. Request for AKC website to provide Parent Club rescue links. AKC staff indicated this service is already provided.
  5. Request made that all Parent Club members register all their puppies.
  6. Newfoundland Club of America wrote a letter to AKC with suggestions of alternate revenue sources.
  7. Archives. Norma Rosado-Blake, professional archivist, has been hired by AKC. Archiving is available to all Parent Clubs to help preserve archives at no cost to the clubs. Collections become the property of AKC with a “deed of gift”. Complete access to materials is given to the clubs at no cost. Collections will be held at the NYC AKC offices. Service is also available for independently held archives.
  8. Discussion on new requirements to hold dog shows. It was the opinion of many that the new requirements will be a hardship to many smaller clubs. Eligibility requirements will be a discussion topic at the Parent Clubs Conference.
  9. Discussion of Bred By Exhibitor class requirements for AKC/Eukanuba show regarding dogs that have taken points from the Puppy Class before being exhibited in Bred By. AKC will discuss eligibility of these dogs and report back.
  10. Catalogs being sold no more than two hours ahead of show time challenged as impractical for national specialties.
  11. Group Clubs. There are currently 97 Group Clubs many of which will are becoming eligible for AKC membership. Group Clubs are not new, as the American Spaniel Club has been in existence well over one hundred years.
  12. Discussion on requirement for ex-pens at outdoor shows. Many expressed their belief that this is a ridiculous requirement, but no action was taken at this time on the part of AKC Staff.

Herding, Earthdog and Coursing

  1. Judges Conflict of Interest exemption accepted by the AKC Board for herding judges. Judges may judge other herding venues as well as AKC events.
  2. Coursing Advisory Committee submitted report and it was returned by AKC staff with minor changes. It will now go to the AKC Board.
  3. Earthdog, no report.
  4. Herding Advisory Committee moving very slowly. Committee will request a “sit down” as well as a conference call to work on the HAC. HEC proposed sending a letter to HAC members to address the issues that are slowing the process.
  5. John McNabney, Scottish Terrier Club of America, filled committee vacancy.
  6. Updated and corrected judge’s lists for all three venues complete and submitted to AKC staff to update. Staff set a goal of six months to implement corrections.
  7. Committee is considering a performance clubs e-list. Staff will send letters out to invite list members.
  8. Herding Judge’s Seminars. Motion to make judge’s seminar a video with a five year renewal cycle, instead of three years, and provide on line testing to replace current seminar system. Staff reported this will need to be submitted by the HAC.
